Textured Paintings

How Texture Is Built

We work mostly in oil and heavy body acrylic, sometimes with a palette knife, sometimes with the blunt end of a brush or a torn scrap of card. Impasto ridges go on wet, set overnight, then get cut into or glazed over the next morning. A single canvas can hold a dozen passes before it reads as finished. The gel mediums we use hold a peak the way stiff icing does, so the marks keep their edge as they dry rather than slumping flat. The result has small shadows of its own, so the piece looks one way at breakfast and another once the lamps come on.

These works earn their keep in rooms where people gather and linger.
