Description “Shattered Wings II”

Built almost entirely from broken palette-knife splinters, the butterfly here spreads its wings the full width of the canvas. The body runs as a slim dark vertical down the middle, antennae arc upward in fine flicks, and the wings flare outward in jagged shards of turquoise, royal blue, violet and bone-white. A streak of bright purple runs through the wing centers, holding the two halves together.

Composition is symmetrical but never tidy. The left wing leans cooler — turquoise, ivory and warm ochre; the right wing pulls into deeper blues with a single violet flare. The ground around the figure is a scuffed pale gray that chips back to plaster, the broken edges of the wings reading like fragments still drifting outward. The eye lands on the body, splits to either tip, and circles back through the chipped negative space.

Color is held in a tight register — turquoise, royal blue and violet against bone-white, with a few hot ochre dabs lifting the warmth. Up close the hand-painted oil surface holds real relief: chunky knife planes for every wing-shard, raised tabs that throw small shadows, the gray field worn back in places to expose lighter ground. The picture reads kinetic and decorative without ever feeling busy.

It carries strong presence in modern interiors — above a low credenza in a contemporary living room, on the back wall of a salon, café or boutique reception space, in a creative kid''s room, or as the single horizontal hero piece in a hallway. A picture light angled from above pulls every shard into full relief and lets the wings catch real movement.

Buyers of abstract canvas art often pair this work with other large-format canvases.

Additional Information “Shattered Wings II”

Built almost entirely from broken palette-knife splinters, the butterfly here spreads its wings the full width of the canvas. Visual cues include animal, forms, and layers.

The palette is anchored by black, blue, and orange. The composition is horizontal.

Shattered Wings II sits well in a bedroom or a hallway. Beauty salon and boutique hotel settings are also a strong fit.

It pairs with expressionism and impasto interiors more naturally than ornate ones. A horizontal hang reads well above a sofa or a low credenza.

Color-wise, the piece works with black, blue, orange, purple, and white. The cool register keeps the work quiet; nothing pushes forward more than the rest.

Oil on stretched canvas, brought up by a single painter in continuous sittings. Layers of oil build up over the underpainting, so the surface carries visible weight and the brushwork stays legible.

The expressionism character runs through the underpainting, while the impasto feel emerges in the surface passes. Shattered Wings II is finished with the traditional drying and varnishing cycle; the stretcher is keyed evenly to keep the canvas flat in shipping. The horizontal stretch is keyed at the long edges first; that is what keeps the canvas from bowing across a wider span.

Hang a horizontal canvas above a low piece of furniture; let the work span at most two-thirds the width below. Keep 15-25 cm of clearance from the headrest or the top of the furniture below; closer than that feels crowded.

The expressionism character of Shattered Wings II prefers a wall that has a single focal piece rather than a grid. View Shattered Wings II from about twice the canvas height back; that is the distance at which the surface settles.
