“Gilded Cleft 3”
Hand and tool are everywhere on this surface. The cream-white middle of the canvas is built from heavy knife strokes laid one beside another, then partly scraped flat, leaving a soft, sandy plane studded with little torn ridges. Through this plane, the artist has scratched a web of fine lines with the back end of a brush or the tip of a knife, producing thin incised marks that expose a darker base color underneath — almost like drawing into wet plaster.
A warm gold passage runs vertically along the left third. Up close, the metal is broken into smaller plates, each one a single confident press of a loaded knife. Where the gold meets the cream, the seam is rough and slightly raised, and a few small flecks of metal have ridden up onto the white. Lower down, the gold cools into a softer copper and bleeds sideways into the cream as a thinned wash, giving the whole left half a slow, weathered glow.
On the right, a vertical black bar grounds the picture. It has been brushed on in long, slow strokes with a wide loaded brush, the bristles still visible as fine combs at the edges.
