About American Impressionism Oil Painting Reproductions

A porch in Connecticut, late afternoon, a woman reading while the light breaks apart across the lawn behind her. That is more or less the world American Impressionism kept coming back to at the turn of the last century. Painters who had trained in France carried the loose, bright brushwork home and pointed it at their own gardens, coastlines and quiet domestic hours. We reproduce those canvases in oil, by hand, keeping the flicker and warmth intact, and if this particular mood isn't yours we also keep other oil painting reproductions across many schools and centuries.

    American Impressionism, Briefly

From the 1880s into the 1910s, artists like Childe Hassam, Mary Cassatt and William Merritt Chase adapted French ideas to plainly American subjects and light. The palette stayed high-keyed and the touch stayed visible, but the settings turned local: New England summers, sunlit city parks, kitchens and parlours caught mid-afternoon. It is optimistic painting, made for looking at rather than being lectured by, and that is a large part of why it wears so well at home.

The movement grew out of clubs and summer colonies, painters gathering in places like Old Lyme and Cos Cob to work side by side. That sociability shows in the pictures. They feel lived-in, unhurried and generous.

    What You Actually Receive

A hand-painted reproduction on real canvas, built up in oil layers by one of our studio painters, never a print and never sold as an original. We match the palette and the rhythm of the brush as closely as the medium will let us, then send a photo for your approval before shipping. Clients who enjoy this kind of bright storytelling sometimes cross over to our mexican muralism oil painting reproductions when they want something bigger and bolder for a main wall.

    Where It Hangs

These canvases love daylight. Try one near a window, or above a favourite reading chair.

    A Harder Edge

Pick a size that fits the wall, from compact garden studies to large summer scenes, stretched or rolled to suit your framer. We photograph every finished piece before it leaves us, and we'll tweak anything that doesn't sit right. If you want the same era seen through a tougher, more social eye, our american realism oil painting reproductions tell the other half of the story.
