The picture catches a busy moment on the slope. Above them, jagged peaks meet a moody cobalt sky, lit by quick flicks of pink and ochre at the horizon line. The snow is built in chunky knife-loads, each ridge throwing a small honest shadow under raking light; the dark crevices and rock cores have been laid in deep cobalt and slate, with quick flecks of red and yellow scattered through the upper sky like distant flags or signage.
